YouTube Tips for Teachers

The old school teaching method of writing information on a board is no longer the norm now. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic,  times have changed. With a touchscreen, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, teachers can teach and share information at the click of a button.

Tips for Using YouTube as a Teaching Tool

Given the potential of YouTube, here’s a list of things you can do to make the best out of this platform in terms of teaching:

Start Your Own Channel

To reach out to your students directly, you can also start your YouTube channel.  Post concept videos and conduct online doubt clearing sessions using the YouTube Live feature. YouTube offers a course on how to bring your ideas to life using the right educational video format and building your own brand.

Free Lectures Available Online

There is an array of educational videos that are currently available on YouTube. These include videos related to History, Geography and Political Science that have been made by eminent organizations. You can include them alongside your lectures to help students get a broader view of a topic.

Build a Playlist of Educational Videos

The “Add to Library” feature present below just below the video window will allow you to save and share a playlist of videos. In this way, you can also curate educational videos for your students.

Click on the ‘add to’ option underneath the video, enter a name for your playlist, decide whether you want to keep it public, private, or listed, and click on ‘create.’’.

Try Video Essays

It can be a particularly useful tool in order to provide classroom instruction. They are usually meticulously narrated along with video and audio to make the argument similar to a traditional essay. It can also help in introducing new topics that inspire students to think and debate. They can also provide research fodder for projects. Students can also emulate and create their own video essays to practice and demonstrate their learning experience.

Additional Tips for Handling Your Online Channel

Some  other tips for managing your channel include the following:

Create Videos with Captions

Captions help automatically transcribe the verbal content of the video. In order to enable captions, you need to click on the captions icon present at the bottom of the video, click on options, click translate, select a language, and press ‘Ok’.

Adding Annotations

This feature allows you to make interactive videos. This way, you can draw more engagement from your students. With annotations, you can add layer text and links to your videos. In order to access annotations, you need to click on the channel video manager next to the video you wish to edit. Then, click the arrow to the right of the edit button and click “annotations”. Click the add button present on the right and apply changes when you are done adding them.

Adding Closed Captions and Subtitles

The option of closed captions and subtitles opens up your content to a larger audience.  In order to add subtitles, you need to go to the video manager, click on the video you want to add subtitles, and click the drop-down menu.  Select subtitles, and CC options. In the drop-down menu, you need to choose the most spoken language and click on the set language.

Adding Audio to Videos

The Audio swapping tool allows you to add a variety of songs to videos. You can also add songs freely available on YouTube’s audio library. To add songs, go to the video manager page, click on the edit button on the video you need to edit.  In the drop-down menu, click on “audio” and select the track by clicking it. Search for the required track.  Once you have found it, click on “save”, and the new audio will be applied to the video.

Invest in a Microphone

This is more of a requirement than a tip to ensure that you have the proper sound quality. If you plan to film yourself,  you can opt for a wearable microphone to ensure you have clear audio. You can also try reaching out to your school’s library department to see if they already have some sound equipment handy.
