9 Weird Degrees You Wished You’d Known About Sooner

By CareerExperts on 25th July 2017 Choosing Your Career, Graduate Careers

Choosing your degree subject is a big decision and there are a vast number and range of degrees to choose from.

If the more conventional degrees like Maths, English and History aren’t appealing to you and commercial degrees like Business Management, Finance and Marketing seem a bit boring, you might want to consider some unconventional ideas…

Take a look at these nine weird degrees!

    1. Bagpiping – Carnegie Mellon University

    Weird degrees - bagpiping

Do you want to be a bagpiper? Or a bagpipe teacher? Well, then there’s no better degree than this!

    2. Brewing and Distilling – Herriot Watt University

    Weird degrees brewing and distilling

Pints at the pub aren’t cheap so why not learn to brew your own? Saying that, a four-year brewing and distilling degree isn’t cheap either, but you’re sure to have plenty of friends by the end of it. And you can throw some top house parties!

    3. Ethical Hacking – Abertay University

    Weird degrees ethical hacking

Hacking is bad… unless you do it ethically, right? Well not quite. This course teaches students how to hack but for the purpose of developing appropriate counter measures. If you’re a tech geek this weird degree will be right up your street.

    4. Harry Potter and the Age of Illusion – Durham University

    Weird degrees Harry Potter

Are you a Harry Potter fanatic? This course at Durham University is truly magical so if your Hogwarts letter never came, you’ll just have to settle for this.

FUN FACT: Durham Cathedral was one of the locations used for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.

    5. The Beatles, Popular Music and Society – Liverpool Hope University

    Weird degrees - The Beatles

Where else would you study a degree on The Beatles other than Liverpool? You probably have plenty of song lyrics already committed to memory, so how hard can this degree be?

If you’ve already started a boring Batchelor’s degree, the good news is that this is a postgraduate course. It’s not too late to apply!

    6. The Science of Superheroes – University of California

    Weird degrees super heros

Have you ever wondered if Superman could really fly? What was Spiderman’s spidey sense? How did Wonder Woman’s invisible jet work? What does it really mean for something to be a scientific “fact”? Head over to the University of California to find out!

    7. Theatre Practice & Puppetry – University of London

    Weird degrees - puppetry

Have you ever dreamt of being a muppet? We haven’t either but it probably would be a pretty fun job. Graduates from this course have been known to find work at Cirque du Soleil, the London Symphony Orchestra, performing shadow puppet workshops and puppeteering at Thorpe Park!

    8. Viking Studies – University College London

    Weird degrees Vikings

Vikings are cool and a degree about Vikings is even cooler. Viking students get to spend their final year in either Denmark, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. You can practically become a Viking!

    9. Viticulture and Oenology – Plumpton College

    Weird degrees Viticulture and Oenology

No idea what these words even mean? We didn’t know either, but to put it simply this is a course in WINE! We’re assuming wine-tasting is involved…Where do we sign up?

    What do you think?

Do you know of any other weird degrees that aren’t featured on our list? Are you currently undertaking a weird degree yourself? Leave us your thoughts in a comment below!
