5 Steps to Avoid Injuring Yourself at Work

Injuries at work can be devastating for employees. Those working with heavy machinery are especially at risk and could be involved in serious accidents. This also means that workers may miss out on work and the income that they rely on. However, it is not only the accident itself that causes complications, but injuries can be costly and lead to legal battles with employers. Taking precautions and protecting yourself at work, therefore, goes a long way. What steps can you take to avoid injuries at work?

What impact can an injury at work have?

There are many potential drawbacks caused by an injury:

    • You may lose income
    • The company you work for loses a worker temporarily
    • Legal issues
    • Serious complications stemming from injury can significantly impact your livelihood

It’s important to note that the responsibility is with you to take certain steps, not just with your employer.

5 essential steps to keep yourself safe in the workplace:

    1. Invest in quality PPE.

Usually, employers provide PPE, but if this is not the case, investing in quality PPE relevant to your workplace hazards can help to avoid serious injury if incidents do occur.  In environments such as building sites, protective footwear is essential. Study boots that protect the toes and are still comfortable to work in can be very valuable.

     2. Concentration and Awareness.

When working around heavy machinery and moving vehicles, don’t forget to always maintain concentration and awareness. Ensure you are fully awake and aware in the morning when you first start.

    3. Communicate with those around you.

Avoid listening to music in hazardous environments and communication needs to be maintained between you and your colleagues.

    4. Take note of company safety policies.

Your company should have provided training and have appropriate safety policies in the workplace – regularly remind yourself of these as they are for your protection.

    5. Do things properly.

Avoid taking shortcuts, this is where accidents are more likely to occur.

Studies show: Most accidents don’t necessarily happen on construction sites

Many people don’t realise that the majority of accidents don’t necessarily occur on construction sites or very risky workplaces. In fact, workers in those fields tend to be more careful than others and often manage to avoid accidents.

You could injure yourself anywhere, which is why staying alert and focusing on the task is extremely important for your own safety and that of others.

Of course, injuries can always occur, even if you take steps to protect yourself, but by following the necessary safety regulations you can save yourself a lot of trouble. The HSE provides more information on ways to avoid accidents from occurring.
