8 Productivity Hacks for Millennials Who Work from Home

More millennials are making the short commute from their bedroom to the home office. In fact, Forbes notes that the work from home trend has taken off as in a span of ten years (2005-2015), the number of people working from home has increased by 115%.

While commute times are shorter and work attire is your favourite pair of jeans and a t-shirt, working from home comes with its fair share of challenges. For one, when home is the office, you may never feel like you can get away from work.

And two, you may feel guilty if you aren’t working; almost half of millennial employees don’t use their full vacation time. Besides the vacation-shame, perhaps productivity has something to do with it?

Whether you’re a flex worker or a freelancer, it only helps to refine your process so you’re able to meet deadlines consistently and can take a break or two. That said, here are 8 ways work-from-home millennials can boost their productivity suggested by Lilo, a web development agency that promotes work-life balance and work productivity.

    1. Track Time

Track time with a productivity app: it helps users track how much time they spend on a project. Using this, you can see where you’re putting your time: projects, invoicing, conference calls, etc. From there, you can determine if you need to change up your workday or not.

    2. Stay Focused

Staying focused is a must-have for millennials who feel overwhelmed by large tasks. To help you can use an ordinary timer, setting it from 5- to 25-minute increments (this is when you focus on that task). After the time is up, you reward yourself with a 1- to 5-minute break. Overall, timers help make overwhelming tasks more manageable.

    3. Trello and/or WunderList

It goes without saying, whether a physical or online planner, you need a way to manage your projects and stay on top of due dates. Trello and WunderList are a couple of useful resources to help you with that; as their names suggest, you write (or type) to-do lists for the day, week, or month. Meanwhile, users manage their busy schedules using boards.

    4. Plan Your Free Time

Yes, you need to plan your free time too. That way, you don’t just keep clocking in and working over the weekends. It forces you to get outside, run those errands, and enjoy time with family and friends. Plus, it gets your recharged and ready for the next work week.

    5. Block Your Day Out (Ahead of Time)

Have some weekly tasks? Schedule them the day or week before. Doing this now means you’ll have one less task to do that day. Of course, there’s always going to be that last-minute meeting or assignment you need to rush for a client. But, with most of your day already planned, it should take you no more than a couple minute to work those into your calendar.

    6. Streamline, Streamline, Streamline

Decrease the amount of time you spend emailing with pre-formatted templates. Use invoicing apps, time-tracking platforms like Clockspot and bookkeeping services (if you run your own business) to make better use of your time.

    7. Morning or Night Person?

Some people are morning people. Others are night owls. Which one are you? If you can, schedule most of your work during those times.

    8. Explain to Family and Friends

Lastly, just because you work from home doesn’t mean you can pick up your niece from daycare. Nor does it mean you can watch Fluffy while your aunt runs errands. Work from home is just that: Work—that happens to be from your home.

Explaining to your family and friends about your job and when you can talk and hang out may help prevent unexpected phone calls and out-of-the-blue just-stopping-bys.
