    Getting Botox: What To Expect

In years gone by, the idea of getting botox injections as an aesthetic or cosmetic procedure was regarded as only for Hollywood stars and famous actors. However, in recent times botox injections have become incredibly popular, with people across the world using them regularly to boost their looks.

If you’ve booked your very first botox appointment, you’re undoubtedly feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves. This is perfectly normal. In fact, most people report feeling anxious about botox injections, particularly those who are not fans of needles. The truth is that it is a relatively simple procedure, with many surprised at how quick and easy it is. We’ve put together a guide that will let you know what to expect as you await your first botox injection. Check it out below.

    What Is Botox?

Botox is the name given to a drug that is made from a toxin produced by a bacteria called clostridium botulinum. This toxin is the same one that can cause the dangerous condition botulism, but in small doses, it can be used to effectively treat a number of conditions.

The botulinum toxin can also be used for cosmetic procedures. It can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by targeting associated muscles on the face. The effects can take a few days to become apparent and up to several weeks to fully manifest. After that, you can expect the effects to last for around three or four months.

    How Is Botox Administered?

Botox is injected into the face using a thin needle. The injection sites will depend on what areas of the face are being treated and how much botox you are getting.

First, the practitioner will clean your face and then identify the injection sites. They will then administer the botox, often asking you to move different facial muscles to aid the process.

This might sound scarier than it actually is. Your practitioner will be highly trained and will have completed advanced botox training, so they will know what they are doing. The entire procedure shouldn’t take much longer than ten minutes.

    What Happens After?

Immediately after the botox has been injected, ice packs will be applied to the face to help reduce any swelling. This will be done for a few minutes, after which you will be free to leave and go home.

While there are no follow-up appointments or specific actions you need to take, there are a few pointers that you should follow to ensure the botox works properly and you see the best results. Avoid putting heavy pressure on your face and try not to lie down for a few hours after the procedure to allow the botox to settle.

Also, avoid strenuous exercise or heavy physical activity for at least 24 hours. Exercise can stimulate the muscles in your face and can affect how botox works.

    Conclusion

Nerves are normal as you head into your first botox appointment. However, there really isn’t anything to fear, use this guide to know what to expect.
