How to be Happy: 10 Habits of Happy People

What makes us happy? Happiness is a concept that differs for each of us and it can be hard to pin down. However, when you’re feeling happy you know it and it feels great!

Happiness and work don’t always go hand in hand. Many people get stuck doing roles that they don’t enjoy in businesses that aren’t a good fit for them. While we all have our down days, if you’re continuously unhappy at work, you should check out this article.

Happy people are more motivated, energised and productive than their unhappy counterparts. Happiness really does have a huge impact on the success of your career and your life.

Discover how to be happy with these 10 habits.

    10 habits of happy people

    1. Improve yourself

Do you feel that you can’t change who you are, you’re just you? This isn’t a good mindset to have as when new challenges and problems arise that may be difficult to handle, you will automatically feel overwhelmed.

It’s important to develop a growth mindset, that is the belief that you can improve with effort. We can all do it! If you truly believe that you can improve by putting in the effort, you will be able to handle difficulties and challenge more effectively and be happier. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn something new and improve yourself, so grab it!

    2. Set daily goals

Effectively organising your day will help you to achieve more and feel happier. Set yourself clear daily goals, plan your tasks and play to your strengths. With a clear plan in mind, you’ll be able to find your flow which is an intense state of focus in which productivity and happiness flourish!

    3. Stop obsessing over things you can’t control

Some things are beyond your control. You can’t control the state of the economy for example and while it’s good to be in the know, fretting over issues that you have no power over is only going to diminish your happiness.

    4. Pick your battles wisely

Happy people know how to keep their emotions in check. This skill is most useful in situations that involve conflict. If you let your emotions rule your head, you will end up digging your heels in and fighting a battle that is only going to make you feel unhappy for a length of time. It’s important to take a step back from your emotions, pick your battles wisely and stand your ground when the time is right.

    5. Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is crucial to happiness! It improves your mood, focus, self-control and ultimately your success. You need enough sleep for your brain to recharge and your body to repair. If you make sleep a priority then you will feel the benefits, take a look at our article on how to sleep better here.

    6. Stick to your moral code

Compromising your morals in order to achieve success won’t bring you happiness. Instead it will lead to feelings of regret, dissatisfaction and demotivation. Make sure that you know your moral code and stick to it, even when others are pressurising you.

    7. Help others

Helping people makes us happy, it’s science! Helping others gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. While it’s important not to overcommit yourself, helping others, where you can, will help your happiness.

    8. Exercise

We all know that exercise releases endorphins that make us feel good. Even doing as little as 10 minutes of exercise a day will improve your mood and performance at work. While going to the gym isn’t for everyone, finding an active hobby that you enjoy will help you to get your fix.

    9. Declutter

Clutter at home and in the workspace isn’t good for your happiness. Create an environment that you find uplifting and soothing. Get rid of anything that is insignificant and display things that inspire you. That could be a photo of your family, awards you have won or something as simple as a plant.

    10. Look forward

The best is yet to come. This is a belief that happy people have. Being positive and optimistic about the future will not only make you happier but it will also improve your performance today. The future has great things in store and it’s down to you to make them happen.
