Starting a New Career in Healthcare Law

By CareerExperts on 22nd August 2019 Choosing Your Career, Graduate Careers

Looking for a new career that’s going to really make a difference? Becoming a healthcare lawyer could be a great option. Although not the easiest profession to get into, the benefits of becoming a healthcare lawyer are vast.

Here, you’ll discover more about this lucrative and rewarding career option and how you can get started.

    Why consider healthcare law?

There are a lot of specialities you can choose within the legal profession. However, healthcare law is by far one of the most rewarding; particularly if you opt to be a claimant lawyer. This will allow you to take cases on in behalf of patients and their families.

Not only will you be making a real difference as a healthcare lawyer, but you’ll also earn a decent salary too. As an additional bonus, this type of career is typically recession proof.

    What a healthcare lawyer does

A healthcare lawyer can have numerous responsibilities. You may end up working with hospitals, doctors and insurance providers, providing advice on their legal obligations and rights. If you become a claimant lawyer, you’ll generally deal with clinical negligence claims.

You’ll also need to keep up with changing regulations and potentially deal with controversial issues. The role can be extremely varied, and you may need to attend court with your clients if a peaceful resolution can’t be found.

What do you need to get started?

If you’re interested in becoming a healthcare lawyer, you will need to study towards an LLB. This is basically a law degree which you’ll study at undergraduate level. Be sure to choose a module that focuses on healthcare.

Once you have a degree, you can then study a Legal Practice Course (LPC). It’s important to note that these types of courses are expensive. For this reason, you may want to consider taking the course part-time so you can work to support the costs. Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll need a training contract. This is where you’ll train within a healthcare lawyer’s office. These can be pretty tough to secure, so it could be worth getting some work experience before applying.

Overall, becoming a healthcare lawyer can be a rewarding career. However, it will take hard work and it can be expensive. The above is just a brief overview of what a healthcare lawyer does and the requirements needed to become one. It’s recommended you do as much research as possible before deciding whether this is the right career choice for you.
