6 Steps How to Get a Remote Job in 2020 (That You Will Actually Like)

By CareerExperts on 25th March 2020 Job Searching, Job Searching Tips

When people used to say that they worked online, it was often met with scepticism. Now, remote work is becoming more common for both employees of traditional businesses and entrepreneurs.

If you’re interested in landing a remote job in 2020, you might be at a loss for where to look. Here are six steps to help you get the remote job you want.

    Do Some Soul Searching

Having a remote job sounds excellent on paper. You can work in your sweatpants and don’t have to concern yourself with a morning commute. While there are a lot of benefits to remote work, it’s not for everyone.

To be successful in a remote role, you need to have strong self-management skills. That means being able to set aside distractions and get work done. Many remote workers tend to feel isolated and miss the camaraderie and social interaction of the office.

Set aside some time to evaluate the pros and cons and determine if a remote job is right for you.

    Identify Your Ideal Work Situation

Not all remote jobs are built the same. Do some research to determine which environment appeals to you.

    Part-Time vs. Full-Time

When looking for remote work, identify if you’d rather have one full-time employer or open yourself up to numerous clients in a more entrepreneurial setup. With full-time, you have more stability. With part-time, you have more flexibility.

    Set Hours vs. Flexible Hours

Decide whether you prefer to work with set hours or flexible hours. Having set hours helps you manage expectations and set boundaries when working from home. Flexible hours gives you more room to determine your daily schedule.

    Team-Oriented vs. Silos

Some employers will have a team of remote workers that collaborate on projects. Others have remote workers who stay in their silos and interact directly with their manager.

    Create a Brilliant Resume

Having a well-crafted resume is just as crucial for landing a remote job as it is for a traditional job. You can visit ResumeBuild to use a high-quality resume template to suit your needs.

When creating a resume for online work, be sure to highlight your soft skills, such as strong time management and your ability to work independently.

    Use Your Network

Before you dive into the job searching process, use your networks to identify any potential roles that your contacts could help you land. You can do this by reaching out and optimizing your social media profiles, focusing on LinkedIn.

Although you’re looking for remote work, it’s worth connecting with your in-person network as well.

    Apply on Remote-Oriented Job Boards

After you’ve explored your network and crafted a resume, start the job searching process. Avoid traditional job boards for this purpose, and use remote work-oriented boards instead.

Some of the best remote job boards include:

    • AngelList
    • Remote.com
    • Remote.co
    • WeWorkRemotely
    • Flexjobs

It’s also worth adding your dream employers to your list and checking their websites for job openings regularly.

    Nail The Interview

The interview is an important step in the remote job search process for both you and your potential employer. It allows you both to confirm each other’s identities and prove that everything is legitimate.

Take time to practice your interview ahead of time and dress for success. While you might plan on working in your pyjamas, business casual is a must for your remote work interview.

By following these six steps, you’ll be able to find a job you love in 2020.
